Frequently asked questions

The questions we hear most often before a purchase — compatibility, installation, connectivity and data ownership.

Which vehicles does CampMatic fit?

Any motorhome, camper van or caravan with a compatible Truma heater and a Truma CP Plus control panel. The box sits on the LinBUS between the panel and the heater — the vehicle built around it makes no difference.

We have tested extensively in the VW Grand California 600 and 680, among others. That is an example, not a requirement: CampMatic runs just as well in vehicles from Hymer, Knaus, Pössl, Bürstner, Adria, Dethleffs and many more — anywhere a suitable Truma is fitted.

Which Truma heaters are supported?

All common Combi models plus the Vario Heat:

  • Truma Combi 4 (gas) and Combi 4 E (gas/electric)
  • Truma Combi 6 (gas) and Combi 6 E (gas/electric)
  • Truma Combi D 6 (diesel) and Combi D 6 E (diesel/electric)
  • Truma Vario Heat (gas)

Gas, diesel or electric makes no difference to CampMatic — what matters is the CP Plus in front of it.

Do I need a CP Plus, and which firmware does it need?

Yes, a Truma CP Plus is required. You will find the firmware version in the panel under Settings → INIT.

  • C4.00.00 or newer — full control, everything works.
  • Vario Heat: here the version number may start with P instead. That works too — one customer runs CampMatic successfully with P5 on a Vario Heat with E-Kit.
  • C3.xx.xx — older protocol: values can be read, but not controlled. An upgrade to C4 is possible.

Not sure what your display shows? Send us your version number at info@campmatic.de and we will tell you in advance whether it fits.

Can my original Truma iNet Box stay installed?

No. CampMatic announces itself to the heater as an iNet Box — two of those on the same LinBUS do not get along. The original box has to come out before installation. CampMatic takes over its slot directly; depending on your wiring, an RJ12 coupler or a Y-adapter is available for that.

The newer Truma iNet X is not supported — it uses a different protocol.

Does the heater have to run in camping mode for this?

No. That is a common misconception. CampMatic controls the Truma over the LinBUS — exactly as the CP Plus itself does. No special vehicle mode is required; the heater runs entirely normally.

What is the difference between CampMatic Truma and CampMatic Guard?

CampMatic Truma controls your Truma heater and hot water and additionally monitors gas, battery and climate. It connects to the CP Plus.

CampMatic Guard only monitors — gas bottles, leisure battery and interior climate — but does not control a heater. In return it needs no Truma connection: 12 V or USB is enough. That is the right choice for vehicles without a compatible Truma, or without a Truma at all.

Both lines come in a WiFi and a 4G variant. You will find a comparison in the shop.

How long does installation take — do I need a workshop?

About ten minutes, and you do it yourself. Nothing is soldered, crimped or drilled: the box connects via ready-made RJ12 plugs and takes a 12 V supply. You will need tools at most to reach the back of the CP Plus.

An illustrated step-by-step guide is available under Help → Installation.

Does installing it void my Truma warranty?

No. CampMatic is plugged in only — nothing on the heater itself is modified, opened or permanently altered. The box can be removed again at any time without a trace. Your Truma manufacturer warranty is unaffected.

For context: CampMatic is an independent product and not official Truma equipment. Truma® is a registered trademark of Truma Gerätetechnik GmbH & Co. KG.

Do I need a splitter or an adapter?

That depends on how you connect. There are three routes:

  • At the CP Plus via splitter (recommended) — you never have to reach the heater. This needs the RJ12 splitter set, which you can add to your order.
  • Directly at the heater — into the free right-hand socket of the Truma. No splitter needed here.
  • In place of an existing iNet Box — depending on the wiring you need an RJ12 coupler (one cable) or a Y-adapter (two cables in TIN 1).

The installation guide shows with photos which route suits you.

What should I watch out for with the 12 V supply?

This is the one point that really matters, because almost all sporadic restarts trace back to it. Ideally connect the box to the same 12 V supply the Truma uses — easiest via the JST-PH plug at the CP Plus.

If you use the red/black cable instead: run it directly and fused to the leisure battery. Not to the load output of a solar charge controller, and not to a tap shared with the water pump, compressor fridge or inverter. A brief voltage dip is enough to trigger a restart — and it often goes unnoticed in the vehicle.

WiFi or 4G — which variant suits me?

The WiFi variant joins an existing network: your phone hotspot, the campsite WiFi, an LTE router in the vehicle, or Starlink. Once it is online you can reach your camper from anywhere.

The 4G variant brings its own modem and only needs a SIM card. It is the right choice if your vehicle should stay reachable when nobody is there — in winter storage, for example, or for pre-heating before you arrive.

Rule of thumb: if you are always there yourself when the box needs to be online, WiFi is enough. If the camper should be reachable independently of you, choose 4G.

Do I need internet in the camper?

For remote control yes, for operating it no.

If no network is reachable, the box automatically opens its own WiFi. You connect your phone to it, open http://192.168.4.1 and control the heater locally — entirely without internet. The credentials are on the sticker on the box.

And regardless of that, your CP Plus always stays fully usable. CampMatic sits in parallel on the LinBUS and takes nothing away from the panel — even with the box unpowered, your vehicle heats exactly as before.

Which SIM card do I need for the 4G box?

Any standard SIM card with a data plan that works on European mobile networks. A SIM is not included.

Data usage is low, so an IoT or data SIM from around €2 per month is perfectly sufficient. Important: disable the card's PIN prompt first — by far the most common reason a 4G box refuses to register. It takes seconds in any phone.

Would rather not deal with SIM cards at all? See the next question.

Which mobile hotspot do you recommend?

If you would rather avoid SIM cards and roaming altogether, mobile hotspots with CloudSIM technology are a convenient option. They work without a SIM of their own and automatically pick whichever local network is strongest — abroad too, without swapping cards or worrying about roaming tariffs.

We have had good results with the GlobLinker Portable Wi-Fi Hotspot: it includes a free data allowance every month, which goes a noticeable way towards running a CampMatic box.

A hotspot like this is worth considering for the WiFi variant too — it simply joins that network, and you save yourself the 4G box.

How much power does the box draw?

Very little: under 1 watt for the WiFi variant, under 1.5 watts for the 4G variant. Over 24 hours that is roughly 2 to 3 amp-hours — negligible for a leisure battery, even across a longer period in winter storage.

Can I run CampMatic without your cloud?

Yes. CampMatic speaks native MQTT, and the broker is freely configurable. In the box's local configuration interface you enter your own broker under MQTT Broker Host, Port, Username and Password — Mosquitto, EMQX, whatever you run. The values are stored permanently and take effect after a restart of the box. From then on your device runs entirely independently of our infrastructure.

To understand what arrives on which topic, our Home Assistant guide is the best starting point: it documents the topic structure and auto-discovery and ships ready-made configuration files. The same applies to ioBroker, Node-RED or any other system that speaks MQTT.

Two things worth knowing: the path to your own broker is unencrypted (port 1883), whereas the connection to our broker is TLS-secured — so run your broker on your own network or via a VPN, not openly on the internet. And without our cloud the CampMatic app, the Telegram bot and the email notifications naturally fall away; those run on our server.

Does CampMatic work with Home Assistant, ioBroker or Node-RED?

Yes, and without extra software. Heating, hot water, energy mix, temperatures, onboard voltage and the status values announce themselves via MQTT auto-discovery — around forty entities appear in Home Assistant without you writing a single line.

The Bluetooth-paired sensors (gas bottle, battery, climate) send raw values on their own topics; for those we supply a ready-made package file in which you only insert your device number. The full twelve-chapter guide is at campmatic.de/home-assistant.

Can I control the heater with Alexa or Google Assistant?

There is no dedicated CampMatic Alexa skill. The route goes through Home Assistant: once your box is integrated there — quickly done via MQTT auto-discovery — you can expose the entities to Alexa or the Google Assistant through Home Assistant's voice assistant integration and switch your heater by voice.

So this does require a running Home Assistant installation. Voice control directly from the CampMatic app is not available.

What happens to my data?

Your readings sit on our server in Germany and serve one purpose only: showing you your box in the app. We do not sell data and do not pass it to third parties.

This website uses no cookies and no tracking. The details are in the privacy policy.

If you would rather we never held your data at all: point the box at your own MQTT broker — see the first question in this section. Then it never leaves your network.

Which sensors can I pair with CampMatic?

Four types, all via Bluetooth:

  • Truma Level Control — gas level as a percentage, in kilograms and as an estimated remaining range. It calculates in the sensor itself; the bottle type is selected in the Truma app.
  • Mopeka Pro Check — measures the level by ultrasound through the bottom of the bottle, with no intervention in the gas system. For steel and aluminium bottles as well as fixed tanks.
  • BM2 — leisure battery: voltage, state of charge and a 24-hour history.
  • RuuviTag — interior climate: temperature, humidity and air pressure.

How many sensors can I run at the same time?

Several of each type. Two gas bottles, leisure and starter battery, multiple climate sensors in different areas of the vehicle — all of that is supported and shown individually in the dashboard.

With the gas sensors you can even mix types: one bottle with Truma Level Control, the other with Mopeka.

Are the sensors included?

No, the sensors are purchased separately. There is a simple reason: which ones you need depends on your vehicle — the gas bottle size, whether you want to monitor one battery or two, whether interior climate interests you. You only buy what you will actually use.

All of the sensors mentioned are standard products and freely available; you are not tied to us as a source.

Are there ongoing costs or a subscription?

No. There is no subscription and no monthly fee. The CampMatic app, access via our server, the Telegram bot, the email notifications and all firmware updates are permanently included in the purchase price.

The only ongoing cost that may arise is your own mobile tariff, if you run the 4G variant with a SIM card.

How much does CampMatic cost?

The Truma line starts at 149 € for the WiFi variant; the 4G variant costs 40 € more. The Guard line starts at 89 €.

Optional accessories such as the RJ12 splitter set can be added directly to your order. Current prices for all variants are in the shop.
